Experience the unique separation only bone conduction can deliver【BQEYZ Winter 2 Review】

Hey there! It's Otatsu. Thanks for always watching.
This time, I'm introducing BQEYZ's new earphones, the “Winter 2”!

BQEYZ is a popular brand known for its unique sound featuring bone conduction drivers, right? The previous model, Winter, was highly rated, and since this is its successor, I was personally very curious about how the sound had evolved. The price is around ¥50,000, which is a bit steep, but is it worth it? I want to thoroughly test it out.

What is the BQEYZ Winter 2?

winter2

First, let's talk price. The Winter 2 is available for around ¥49,000. As a model that represents a legitimate evolution from its predecessor, it falls into a fairly high price range. However, if you purchase during the crowdfunding campaign, you can save 20% to 10%.

The driver configuration is a hybrid setup: a dynamic driver handling bass frequencies and a bone conduction driver excelling at the delicate expression of mid-to-high frequencies. By assigning each driver its optimal frequency range, the sound becomes clearer. The bone conduction driver, in particular, enhances the Winter series' signature vivid vocal reproduction and separation.

The earphone shells are aluminum. They appear more compact than the previous model and seem to fit the ear better. I'm excited to hear what kind of sound this combination of a metal housing and bone conduction will deliver.

Content Review

The Type-C connector wasn't included, probably because it was just a sample.

Now, let's check the contents.

Winter 2 Earphones (main unit)
Cable
Replacement plugs (3.5mm, 4.4mm, Type-C)
Ear tips (3 types × 3 sizes = 9 pairs total)
Leather-like carrying case
Cleaning brush
Ear tip holder

The set contents are quite luxurious, I'd say. Being able to easily swap plugs is definitely a plus. It's really helpful to have just one pair that you can use differently—like Type-C for your smartphone and 4.4mm when listening through a DAC. ※Note that it doesn't have features like DSP.

The earpieces include one additional type beyond the standard included ones. The BQEYZ earpieces are attached to a metal panel, which is nice because they don't get separated. Considering this is an accessory for a roughly ¥50,000 product, I think the contents are reasonable.

BQEYZ Winter 2 【Review】

We evaluated the performance of the BQEYZ Winter 2 across key criteria on a 5-point scale (1: Poor – 5: Very Good). While ease of use in FPS games is the primary focus, please feel free to use this as a reference.

Sound impression: A crisp, cool-toned sound with a sense of immersion

※ The “Does listening cause fatigue?” category is left unrated because the bone conduction characteristic tends to tire me out.

Now, regarding sound quality evaluation: the vividness of the vocals is arguably top-tier even within this price range. It's not overly sweet, but it's pleasant. While retaining the strengths of the previous model, it seems to have enhanced musical sophistication and increased overall immersion.

Low Frequency Range

First, the bass. In a word, the Winter 2's bass is “high-quality with just the right amount of punch.”

It doesn't push forward aggressively with sheer volume. It competes on the strength of its quality. There's a sense of presence where the sound seems to float slightly, yet it retains a solid core. I find it more impactful than the previous model, so I doubt many people would be dissatisfied with this bass. However, it won't suit those who prefer a heavy, grinding bass type.

It also renders the resonant vibration of strings with clear definition, without blurring the contours. Of course, it never interferes with vocals. Precisely because it offers a presence-filled bass that's neither overbearing nor understated, other frequency ranges can unfold freely.

Midrange

Next, the midrange.

I found it to be a sound with an honest, raw quality, not overly colored. Listening to female vocals creates the illusion of being whispered right into your ear. With male vocals, the thickness and power of the voice resonate directly. It's like a voice that makes you shiver, if that makes sense. This sensation was new to me. Either way sounds great.

Other frequency ranges are quite assertive too, but they're beautifully separated. This is bone conduction. The vocals just float forward. It's like they rise up. This makes voice chat easy to hear too.

Since sound travels through both air vibrations and bone conduction, hearing sound through two separate pathways is a game-changer for separation. That's why this expression is possible.

High Frequencies

Finally, the high frequencies give a sensation of sound clearing out endlessly. The “shan” resonance of cymbals stretches beautifully without piercing the ears. That said, I don't really get that sense of spatial expression in the highs. Like, a crisp sense of openness or something...

It feels like bone conduction controls the sharp yet beautiful resonance unique to metal enclosures, gently smoothing out only the parts that tend to feel harsh. It's not a sound that emphasizes softness, but it never feels piercing to the ears, so I think it's an exquisite tuning.

Soundstage (Spatial Expression) and Localization (FPS Gaming Evaluation)

Now, for the gaming evaluation. The vocal clarity really shines during in-game voice chat too. It's hard to miss your friends' voices. They just float up clearly.

The soundstage isn't just wide left-to-right; it feels deep and tall too, creating a three-dimensional, natural space. That said, the width feels more pronounced than the depth. The key point here is how the bass conveys a sense of presence. It's likely few users would find it lacking.

You might think that such a floating, immersive sound would compromise separation, but not at all. Despite the rich, resonant tones with lingering decay, nothing gets muddled. This is the bone conduction cheat.
The benefits are manifold: sharp sounds like gunfire feel slightly softened, while subtle sounds like reload clicks and footsteps retain clear definition.

That said, the floating soundstage and the fact that some frequencies feel quite close can sometimes make it feel less than transparent, even if the separation is there. Maybe the width is too expansive? It felt slightly different from my expectation of natural spatial awareness.

That said, it'd be a waste to use these earphones just for music listening. They're enjoyable for action games and movies too, and the separation should let you enjoy FPS games within that immersive soundstage.

I can't really use bone conduction due to my body type, so I gave my Winter to a friend and don't have one on hand for comparison. Since the upgrade path leans more towards music listening, I don't think gamers need to force themselves to upgrade.

That said, the vocal quality and overall sound quality have been noticeably improved, so if that's what you're looking for, it might be worth the purchase. While it doesn't quite match my current ideal, its core performance as a tool for detecting enemies is strong. I think it's an earphone that will appeal to gamers who prefer clear, well-separated sound.

BQEYZ Winter 2 [Pros / Cons]

winter2

Now, after covering various points so far, I'll share the “pros” I felt when actually using the Winter 2, along with some honest “cons” in bullet points.

Pros

Vivid Vocal Expression

The real, natural vocals feel like the artist is singing right there—truly impressive listening. Both male and female vocals are enjoyable.

Overwhelming separation within the immersive soundstage

This separation is uniquely achievable through bone conduction. While it might not suit those who dislike bone conduction's characteristics, if you can handle it, it becomes a powerful asset.

Beautiful highs without harshness

The highs sparkle without any irritating sharpness, making them easy on the ears even during long listening sessions.

Points to consider

Gamers might find the soundstage slightly lacking

While the separation is excellent and no frequency range gets buried, the extended decay and resonance might feel pronounced to some, potentially becoming a point of concern.

The fit might not suit everyone

Even though the unit is compact, the sensation of being supported by the earpieces is quite noticeable. Depending on your ear shape, selecting the right earpiece might be necessary to achieve the best fit.

Thank you for reading this far. I hope I've managed to convey at least some of the appeal of the BQEYZ Winter 2. It felt more immersive than I expected, and the excellent separation makes it adaptable to any scene. (I'd recommend it to anyone except those with sensitive constitutions.)

For those who want both separation and immersion
For those who want to savor vocals
For those who want to experience bone conduction sound

I believe it's one of the high-caliber earphones for FPS gaming. If you prefer clear, analytical sound, it should become a powerful tool for locating enemies.
